Harrow Consulting LLP give College Hair and Beauty salons a makeover

Two hair and beauty salons that have been re-designed by a north east building surveying consultancy are helping students at one of the region’s further education colleges get their first taste of working in their chosen profession. Harrow Consulting LLP has designed and project managed the refurbishment of the Elements hair and beauty salons at Darlington College’s Catterick and Darlington campuses. Both locations are fully equipped to professional standards, and are open to the public for the complete range of hair and beauty treatments.

College students aged between 16 and 21 carry out the various treatments under the watchful eye of their tutors, whilst customers get a full salon experience at a considerably lower price than they would on the High Street.

And the response to the upgraded facilities has been universally positive from both salon customers and ‘staff.’

Trevor Hutcheon, Darlington College’s assistant director of estates, says: “Showing as accurately as possible how our vocational training translates into the real world of work is part of the training we provide on all such courses, and the opportunities that our hair and beauty salon students now have in this respect will be invaluable when they move on and start their careers.

“As well as upgrading the salons’ facilities, the refurbishment programme has created just the right kind of atmosphere to both prepare our students for their eventual entry into the world of work and to keep customers coming back to see us.

“We’ve had an excellent response to the new facilities from everyone that’s experienced them, whether in or behind the treatment chair, and Harrow have done an excellent job in turning our aspirations for the project into a highly professional working environment.”

Harrow LLP is a Newcastle-based chartered building surveying consultancy which works with a growing range of private and public sector clients across the north of England. The company, which has particularly expertise in the further and higher education sectors, won the design and project management contract for the salon projects through a competitive tender process.

Nick Rowling, director at Harrow LLP, adds: “The College’s brief gave us the opportunity to create high quality facilities that would mirror what you would see in any commercial beauty salon, and it’s great to see the venues being so well patronised already.”
