Harrow looking to ‘raise their game’

Businesses across the north east are being challenged to prove they’re the best region’s entrepreneurs as part of an innovative scheme to raise funds for St Oswald’s Hospice.

The ‘Raise Your Game’ challenge will see 25 companies from across the north east going head-to-head to see which of them can turn £100 into the biggest possible sum of money over a 12-week period, which will start in July.

Participants can use any legal method to maximise their income, from investing in the stock market or launching a special new product right through baking cakes to sell to workmates or even buying lottery tickets.

All the money raised, including the initial £100 that is provided by St Oswald’s, will go back to the charity at the end of the event, with the competition winner revealed at a special quiz night in November.

Several companies have already signed up to the challenge, which is being run as part of celebrations to mark St Oswald’s 25th anniversary, with well-known organisations including NewcastleGatesheadInitiative, Tesco Finance, GAME and Gamestation already waiting in the starting blocks.

Newcastle-based building surveying consultancy Harrow LLP has also signed up to take part, after being made aware of the event through the Entrepreneurs Forum, and Partner Graeme Harker is already planning how his firm can come out on top.

He says: “We’re a pretty competitive bunch at the best of times, so with the added incentive of raising money for a great cause, we’ll be going all out to beat our competitors to first place.

“St Oswald’s is a real regional institution which touches the lives of so many people across the north east, and we’re proud to be part of their 25th anniversary fundraising team by taking part in the challenge.”

More than £40,000 was raised to support St Oswald’s work with adults, young people and children through the charity’s first enterprise challenge in 2009, and fundraiser Dorothy Alderton, who is co-ordinating the initiative, is hoping that the competitors will top that sum this year.

She adds: “Everyone’s been watching The Apprentice and thinking they could do better than the contestants, so here’s a great chance for the north east business community to prove that it could whilst also raising money for a great regional cause.

“Companies can do absolutely anything to boost their totals, as long as it’s legal, and we’re certain that the region’s best business brains will come up with dozens of clever moneyraising methods which will help them take top spot.

“We’re really pleased with the number of firms that have signed up to take part so far, but want to get the maximum possible number involved, so we can mark our 25th anniversary in style by topping the £40,000 we raised through the first Raise Your Game challenge.”
