Building Conservation Scheme – Knotts Flats

Harrow Consulting Ltd have been appointed by Home Group to commence Phase 1 of a large refurbishment and conservation scheme on Sir James Knotts Memorial Flats in Tynemouth.

Building Conservation and Maintenance works will begin in late 2014 and comprise reroofing works and large scale external conservation works.

Harrow were initially appointed to provide a Building Condition Survey report for the renowned property in order to facilitate a large scale planned maintenance programme.

The property comprises 135 no. 2 bed flats over 5 storeys and is set on an elevated escarpment overlooking the mouth of the Tyne River.

The residential block was one of the first in Britain to be constructed with the incorporation of air raid shelters anticipating WWII and was completed in 1938 by funding from local shipping magnate, Sir James Knott.

Partner at Harrow, Nick Rowling, said: “It is a pleasure working with the Home Group to protect such a prominent building.  The works will ensure the life of the building is prolonged and the property remains in good condition“
