Milburn House: ‘The Hub’

Harrow Consulting Ltd, have completed the first stage of an internal refurbishment scheme within one of the town’s most historic listed buildings.

The stunning, Grade II listed, Milburn House building on Grey Street links Newcastle Quayside to the City Centre, and when built in 1905 was one of the largest brick built office building in Europe and pioneer of its time as one of the first in the North East to create ‘shared’ office spaces under the same roof.

Harrow have completed the first phase of the scheduled internal refurbishment scheme with the formation ‘The Hub’, a fully staffed building management suite and stunning new focal point for all the building’s tenants.

The 3,000 sq ft ‘Hub’ features contemporary and flexible meeting rooms, social gathering spaces, a communal kitchen and food prep area, and changing facilities.  Harrow also created an internal secure bike storage area, comprising the only Police approved ‘secured by design cycle storage system’, the ‘Streetpod’.

Harrow provided Pre-acquisition Survey advice, with Milburn House being eventually acquired by the Tosca Commercial Property Fund last year, who immediately set about improving the building.

Partner at Harrow, Graeme Harker, said:

“The brief from the client has been to produce a working environment which offers tenants everything a modern City Centre office should, and more.

“Now prospective tenants can see the quality and finish of the communal Hub area, we believe they will far better understand what to expect from the finished office spaces.”

Harrow obtained Listed Building Approval for the scheme, providing Architectural Design Services and Project Management duties on behalf of the Client.

An essential part of the design process was dialogue with the Local Authority Listed Building Office. It was essential that architectural features were maintained where possible, as both the exterior and interior of the building carries a Grade II listed status.

Harrow Consulting were able to extensively modernise the building to provide an attractive commercial office property, whilst being sympathetic in maintaining ornate and arresting original features of the building.

Harrow is currently designing similar internal refurbishment schemes across the building’s 7 floors, modernising the building to provide space capable of accommodating any sized business.  Works have already commenced including the refurbishment of existing vacant office suites prior to scheduled occupation by new tenants.

Lettings are being handled jointly by GVA and Sanderson Weatherall. More information is available on www.milburnhouse.com.
