New Contract adds to success

A REGIONAL building surveying consultancy has marked its first anniversary by securing a new long-term contract to help shape the future development of the facilities offered by a North-east further education college.

Harrow LLP will be working with the Darlington College management team to design and develop the facilities needed at its Darlington and Catterick campuses to meet the institution’s evolving requirements.

Work is already underway to redesign the main Catterick campus building’s ground floor, with a new IT suite, painting and decorating workshop, and shower and changing facilities to be added.

Similar extensions are planned at the Darlington campus, with a view to increasing the size of facilities available for the delivery of industrial and vocational courses such as joinery, plastering and engineering.

Harrow has worked with Darlington College on three previous projects, including the refurbishment of the salons used by its health and beauty students, and the development of a classroom-style ‘lecturette’ inside one of its workshops in which non-practical teaching work can be done for vocational students.

The company was also behind the design of the College’s new Glasshouse restaurant, which accommodates around 70 covers and which can be used for private functions or dinners as well as an everyday venue for students.

Set up by Nick Rowling and Graeme Harker in April 2010, Harrow LLP is a North-east building consultancy which works with a growing range of well-known private and public sector clients across the north.

The company combines traditional building surveying services with design and cost expertise to provide a holistic service across a range of industry sectors, and has particular expertise in the health, education and local authority sectors.

Despite the impact of the construction industry’s ongoing difficulties, Harrow has outperformed its first year financial targets, and is already more than halfway towards achieving its second year forecasts.

Nick Rowling says: “There’s no doubt that it’s been a tough year for the commercial property and construction sectors overall, but we’re very pleased with the interest we’ve had in the services we provide, the clients we’ve brought on board and the commercial progress we’ve made so far.

“Clients, particularly in the public sector, are re-evaluating the ways in which they work, and are increasingly focussing on developing long-term relationships with niche consultancies such as ourselves which can help them re-evaluate how they manage their facilities within the budgets they have available.

“The relationship we’re now building with Darlington College is a clear reflection of this trend, and the contract we’ve won with them will enable us to help them shape not just their physical surroundings, but also the portfolio of courses that they can offer their students.

“Things are looking positive as we move into our second year, with a good pipeline of commercial opportunities to add to the work we’ve already secured, and our aim is to keep growing organically as the market continues to recover.”
